The word "modem" is a contraction or abbreviation of the word modulator-demodulator. Modems are typically used to transmit digital data over telephone lines.
Sending modem modulates data into signals compatible with the phone line and modem demodulates received signals back into digital data. Wireless modem converts into a digital data into radio signals and back.
Physically, the modem is divided into 2 types, namely external modem and internal modem. Sample picture is like this:
